SteelSeries Arctis 9X Wireless Review

The SteelSeries Arctis 9X Wireless Gaming Headsets are compatible with Xbox One consoles. These well-built and comfortable ear protectors have a neutral sound profile and a continuous long battery life of 28 hours. However, they struggle to block out background noise and their audio delivery is not very consistent between different users.

Unboxing of SteelSeries Arctis 9X

The SteelSeries Arctis 9X come packed in a simple white and green soft cardboard box, denoting that it is a product specially designed for Microsoft’s Xbox One game console.

On the main face we can see an image of the product with some of its prominent features, leaving the back for its detailed main features. On one of the sides we have the table of characteristics and the content of the package.

The contents of the box can therefore be summarized as:

SteelSeries Arctis 9X Wireless Design

Right out of the box, here we have the SteelSeries Arctis 9X. As you can see, aesthetically speaking it is exactly the same as the rest of the headphones in the Arctis range, with its floating headband design with a strap that we can interchange, and the oval earmuffs with pads lined in breathable fabric that give such good results in terms of ergonomics.

In this case, SteelSeries includes a black and green headband as standard to match the Xbox aesthetics. As always, we can remove this floating strip and put it on to wash it or to change it for another if we want.

On the right earbud we have the vast majority of headphone controls (from left to right in the image): analog volume wheel, microphone mute button, Bluetooth button, LED status indicator, power button, micro USB port of charging, and audio minijack in case we want to connect the headphones in an analog way.

In the left earpiece we only have an analog wheel that will allow us to modify the audio so that we can balance the sound of the game and voice communication.

Of course, in this same headset we also have the retractable microphone that we can put in and take out to hide it when we are not using it and vice versa.

Putting the SteelSeries Arctis 9X Wireless

With the SteelSeries Arctis 9X we do not have the usual software section with SteelSeries Engine, since they do not use it.

They connect directly to the Xbox One via Bluetooth, and if we want to use them with Windows 10 we will need our PC or laptop to have a Bluetooth receiver since the Arctis 9X do not include it, or we will need a 3.5 mm combo minijack cable (which it doesn’t come either) to connect them in an analog way.

To connect them to PC with Windows 10 we also have the option of using, eye to the fact, the wireless receiver of the Xbox One controller.

In the Windows 10 App “Xbox Accessories”, only the headphones appear and only the battery charge level and the firmware version are shown. It does not allow you to interact with anything.

conclusion

I have to admit that the SteelSeries Arctis 9X have left me a bittersweet taste, after having been using them for several days. Although in terms of audio quality, wireless quality, ergonomics and quality of materials, these headphones are undoubtedly an outstanding one, some things that I consider basic for a device that costs 200 euros are missing, such as being included a factory wireless receiver to be able to use them on PC (since it requires you to have an Xbox One wireless receiver that is sold separately for 25 euros), or that give the possibility of making adjustments in the configuration through software (at least profiles equalizer).

Of course they are things that, if we take into account that they have been designed expressly for Microsoft’s Xbox One, it is not that they can be considered “necessary” as such, since if you buy them for the console you will not miss any of this. However, and in that case, I consider that the sale price of 200 euros is excessive and that it will put many users back.
