Unboxing of Roccat Kain 202 AIMO

The German company, now owned by gaming headset maker Turtle Beach, has a penchant for incorporating small design twists that differentiate its products from the pack. Roccat’s newest pointing device, the $99.99 Kain 202 AIMO, turns that trend on its head with a surprisingly plain take on a wireless gaming mouse. It boasts a boxy new look that seems to be a theme across the firm’s newest gear but also conveys a simple concept: a high-quality wireless option without any extra buttons or clutter, including any esports branding.

The Kain’s shape was born out of a meticulous process involving two years of research and rigorous testing. The goal was to create an exceptionally refined and ergonomic build that doesn’t distract or limit you. Every part of the Kain – from the shape to the buttons to the scroll wheel – was finely crafted with care and precision. We’re confident that you can see what we put into it from the very first look.

Roccat Kain 202 AIMO Design

We begin the review itself by reviewing the specifications of the Roccat Kain 202 AIMO. The mouse has dimensions of 430 x 650 x 124 mm and a weight of 105 grams.

In its guts, we find a sensor developed between Pixart and Roccat capable of offering up to 16000 DPI of resolution supporting accelerations of up to 40G and speeds of 400 pps with a 1000 Hz refresh rate.

The sensor comes with an 8051 chip at 36MHz , 512 Kb integrated memory and dual 2.4 Ghz / wired wireless connectivity with a 1000 mAh battery that offers a range of up to 35 hours of use with the lighting on or 50 if we deactivate the lighting.

The finish of the cover offers a good grip, is resistant to dirt and is anti-wear, counting the central area with a finish that emulates brushed aluminum to round off the aesthetic section. The translation of all this, and our feedback on it, is an extremely comfortable mouse, with an outstanding positioning and design of the keypad and an extremely fine finish, pleasant to the touch and with a sublime grip and aesthetics.

Regarding the main keypad, Roccat uses the most outstanding OMRON switches, guarantors of good operation and durability.

But Roccat wanted to go further, with what they have called Titan Click, a complete redesign of the keypad to offer the best possible experience, and they do it exceedingly. In addition to the main button, we find a central button to change the DPI, two side buttons and the click of the scroll wheel.

This wheel has a ribbed rubber coating to improve its grip and a smooth and precise point shift. Finally, at the base of the mouse we find the power button and another for the pairing of the mouse.

Illumination

In the lighting section we find the backlit Roccat logo on the back of the mouse and the scroll wheel with its corresponding backlighting. This lighting has various configurable effects and what Roccat calls AIMO lighting.

This lighting system gives the brand’s peripherals an effect that evolves with use and changes as we interact with the peripherals, reacting with each click, scroll or keystroke.

The truth is that it is the first time that we have in our hands such a sophisticated lighting effect and capable of offering such a striking and interesting visual experience.

Software

ROCCAT Swarm Software enables customization of not only your RGB effects, but also management of button assignments, DPI calibration, vertical and horizontal speed, polling rate adjustability, angle snapping functionality and even sound feedback for certain actions on the mouse.

It’s absolutely free and feature rich, with tools to customize your gaming experience.

conclusion

The German engineered Kain 202 AIMO is another home run from ROCCAT. The hybrid anti-wear coating, Titan click architecture, Swarm Software and Owl-Eye optical sensor make this gaming mouse one of the finest you can acquire under the $100 mark. Phenomenal performance, alongside tremendous ergonomic design, provide a stellar tool in staying at the top of the leaderboard within your favorite online shooters; while the custom AIMO light engine displays vivid RGB effects based off your actions. It’s quite the package and one we highly recommend for PC gamers looking to go wireless.
