This GPU is looking to compare itself to the GeForce RTX 3090. That’s all well and good, but there are a couple of problems when comparing the GeForce RTX 3080 and 3090 to the Radeon RX 6800 XT and 6900 XT. First, RTX 3090 more than doubled the VRAM of the 3080. It also has a wider memory bus and 20 percent more shader cores. Finally, it increased the power target by 10 percent and often delivered superior performance in professional workloads. In contrast, the RX 6900 XT has 10 percent more shader cores than the 6800 XT.  And that’s it.

The Radeon RX 6900 XT is being launched at an SEP price of $999, which lets it sit in the vast pricing gorge between the $700 RTX 3080 and $1,500 RTX 3090. If AMD is claiming that the card trades blows with the RTX 3090, it must beat the RTX 3080 to justify the $300 higher price and get close enough to the RTX 3090 to lure in buyers with the $500 lower price.

The RX 6900 XT is based on AMD’s new RDNA2 graphics architecture, which debuted earlier this year with the GPU that powers the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. This is important for AMD’s RX 6000 series, as game developers build their game engines around consoles first since that’s where the money is, and it minimizes effort for them to optimize their games for the RDNA2 architecture on the PC. The biggest feature addition with RDNA2 is full DirectX 12 Ultimate API support, which includes real-time raytracing using the DXR API, Mesh Shaders, Variable Rate Shading (both tier-1 and tier-2), and Sampler Feedback. AMD has also bolstered the card’s feature set with an updated Radeon Anti-Lag, support for DirectStorage API, and resizable BAR (Smart Access Memory).

The RTX 2080 is now the best card on the market now in terms of peak performance and price (not to be confused with the infamous $/frames ratio). While it’s still an expensive proposition at a retail price of $700, Nvidia isn’t charging a Founder’s Edition tax for this latest refresh which means it’s actually $100 less than it’s predecessor (which it outperforms by 5-10%). While the step-up version, the 2080 Ti, remains more powerful, the additional $400-$500 isn’t worth it for a relatively marginal increase in computing power (between 10 and 30 percent), especially considering the relatively limited use cases for ray tracing that exist at the moment. While we’re seeing more ray-traced games out in the wild now like Wolfenstein: Youngblood, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), and Control, the current pool of games with DXR or Vulkan RT support remains relatively shallow.

The GeForce RTX 2080 Ti is fast. Nobody will argue against that. What bothers gamers most is its price tag. The Founders Edition board costs $1200—71% higher than the flagship GeForce GTX 1080 Ti Nvidia launched back in 2017. Perhaps disappointingly, then, GeForce RTX 2080 Ti averages about 26% faster than its predecessor across our suite of 13 games at 4K.

Soon, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti will be usurped by the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 and 3080, which were unveiled at the company’s September 1 event. That’s saying a lot considering that it’s remained unbeatable for so long.

Still, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 2080 Ti graphics card remains a monster in the gaming department. It brings impressive ray tracing technology and AI-driven Tensor cores to any graphics driven task, and is able to produce over 60 fps in 4K when gaming. Without a doubt, it’s a massive step up from its predecessor, the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti. So much so that it’s easy to forgive that hefty price, if you can afford it.

AMD’s Radeon RX 6800 is one of the best 1440p graphics cards around, offering significantly faster speeds than the RTX 3070 in a number of today’s biggest games, but it falls into many of the same pitfalls as the RX 6800 XT, including lacklustre ray tracing performance at both 1440p and 4K, and no answer (yet) to Nvidia’s DLSS tech to help boost performance at higher resolutions.

From a practical point of view, then, the RX 6800 isn’t too different from its Nvidia rival. Instead, the main advantages you get with the RX 6800 are: more VRAM (16GB of GDDR6 versus the RTX 3070’s 8GB of GDDR6), faster VRAM (clocked at 16 Gbps as opposed to Nvidia’s 14 Gbps), and a higher boost clock speed (2105MHz on AMD’s reference model, up from 1730MHz on Nvidia’s RTX 3070 Founders Edition).

The 16GB of VRAM is very welcome here. We’ve already seen the memory requirements of some 2020 games such as Watch Dogs Legion butt up against the 8GB you’ll find on the RTX 3070, for example, and it means the RX 6800 will be better equipped to deal with the demands of even more memory-intensive games down the line – particularly when it comes to ray tracing.

The Radeon RX 5700 XT is the upper of two new graphics cards, based on a 7-nanometer (7nm) production process, that aim to muffle the thunder Nvidia has been enjoying in the midrange market for so long. And after running it through our benchmarks, this card does so with gusto. It runs a bit hotter than its Nvidia counterparts (the RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 Supers), and its early overclocking results leave something to be desired. But aside from that, the RX 5700 XT is an encouraging card that, thanks in part to a sudden prerelease price drop, gets AMD to a better place than it’s been for years. Midrange graphics card shoppers hungry to see some competition will be pleased.

Radeon RX 5700 XT stands up better to GeForce RTX 2060 Super than we expected at the same $400 price point, simultaneously eclipsing the performance of Radeon RX Vega 64 in the process. AMD’s own Radeon VII is slightly faster, but also significantly more expensive. Although a lack of hardware for accelerating ray tracing does hurt the Radeon’s value proposition in our opinion, gamers who insist they aren’t interested in the technology have a good alternative for smooth 1440p frame rates.

What the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT has to offer is a combination of great gaming performance and a plethora of incredible features. So, even with Big Navi slated for an October 28 launch and touting a card that could deliver double its power, the AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT remains to be among the best graphics cards today.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 is without a doubt the best graphics card on the market for most people. It delivers performance on par with the RTX 2080 Ti at less than half the price, truly bringing 4K gaming to the mainstream for the first time. The GeForce RTX 3070 delivers a substantial performance boost to the high-end $500 market, basically matching the previous gen RTX 2080 Ti. Let’s just hope supply comes a bit closer to meeting demand this round (don’t hold your breath).

The Nvidia Ampere GPU architecture is very much a known quantity now.  The GA104 silicon at the heart of the RTX 3070 comes with 5,888 CUDA cores, which looks like a hell of a lot of gaming logic, especially next to the ol’ RTX 2080 Ti and its 4,352 CUDA cores. That’s because Nvidia has redesigned its streaming multiprocessors (SMs) to include double the number of floating point (FP32) units as previous GeForce GPUs.

The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 is such an awesome piece of hardware precisely because it brings a flagship-level performance to the mid-to-high-end market. In test after test, the GeForce RTX 3070 provides extremely smooth gameplay and performance at 4K, and enables high-framerate performance at lower resolutions. If you want to take advantage of a 144Hz 1080p monitor without lowering quality settings, the RTX 3070 can do that.

Even in hard-to-run titles like Horizon Zero Dawn and Red Dead Redemption 2, the RTX 3070 provides incredible performance, scoring 75 fps in the latter title at 1080p with everything but MSAA maxed out. Anyone familiar with how demanding Rockstar’s Yee-Haw simulator is should recognize how impressive that is – given that the RTX 2070 Super gets just 57 fps in the same test.

It makes Nvidia Ampere more accessible than ever, coming in at $399 (about £299, AU$540). Even so, it offers great performance that matches, and sometimes beats, the RTX 2080 Super. For the price, the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti punches way above its weight class, providing performance that rivals, and sometimes beats, the RTX 2080 Super. At its price, it’s the best graphics cards for most people.


The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti is based on the same Ampere architecture as the RTX 3080, and gives us a look at what the Ampere lineup will look like in the mid-range and budget segment of the GPU market. This isn’t exactly going to be the graphics card that’ll push Watch Dogs Legion with ray tracing at 4K, but it is definitely up to doing it at 1080p.

With this graphics card, you’re getting 8GB of the same GDDR6 memory found in the RTX 3070, paired with 38 Ampere Streaming Multiprocessors (SM). However, because of changes Nvidia has made to its SM since Turing, each of these now has 128 CUDA cores, double that of the 64 in each Turing SM. That means there are now 4,864 CUDA cores in the RTX 3060 Ti, up from the 2,176 found in the RTX 2060 Super.

What we love about new mid-range graphics cards like the RTX 3060 Ti is that they bring the baseline of PC gaming performance up, due to how accessible they are to everyone. The Nvidia GeForce RTX 3060 Ti absolutely blows the RTX 2060 Super out of the water, just like the rest of the Ampere lineup has done to its predecessors.

The Radeon RX 6700 XT is the new kid on the block from AMD, and arguably its most important RX 6000 series graphics card launched to date as it’s the most affordable (on paper) and targets the heart of the performance segment. The card is designed for high refresh-rate 1440p gaming and capable of real-time raytracing. It introduces the company’s second discrete GPU based on the RDNA2 graphics architecture, the 7 nm Navi 22. AMD also claims that the RX 6700 XT should disrupt the sub-$500 graphics market, taking the fight to two of NVIDIA’s popular Ampere products, the GeForce RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3070.

The new RDNA2 graphics architecture from AMD breathed life back into the consumer graphics market by competing with NVIDIA at the highest market segments with the RX 6800 series and the flagship RX 6900 XT Big Navi. It offers full DirectX 12 Ultimate readiness, including real-time raytracing, variable-rate shading, mesh shaders, and sampler feedback. Raytracing is the holy grail of 3D graphics, and while fully raytraced interactive 3D is beyond the capabilities of consumer hardware, it’s possible to combine conventional raster 3D graphics with certain real-time raytraced elements, such as lighting, shadows, reflections, global illumination, and so on, to significantly increase realism.

The RX 6700 XT’s clock speed represents a bit of an interesting compromise. To push clocks into the 2.5GHz range, AMD had to increase the power limits. Considering the smaller die and reduced VRAM, normally we’d expect a pretty significant drop in power requirements compared to the RX 6800, but AMD lists a TBP (Typical Board Power, meaning it includes all power and not just the GPU) of 230W. That’s not bad, and it’s certainly within reach of most modern gaming PCs as it only requires a decent 500W PSU (AMD recommends 650W or higher). However, it’s slightly more than Nvidia’s competing RTX 3060 Ti and 3070 GPUs.

The Radeon RX 6700 XT delivers good performance, and the official price looks reasonable. It’s doubtful AMD will meet the demand at launch, but long-term this should prove a competitive offering in the GPU market.
